macOS Server App Reviews

Purchasing isn’t that expensive.

At this point purchasing server for $20.00 vs $1000 for windows server seems like a pretty good deal. I know Windows Server is not comparing apple to apples per se but for what you get $20 is not that bad. I don’t need windows user cals / licenses, I don’t need windows server license etc etc etc. So I won’t complain.

Apache services do not work anymore!!

After upgrading from OSX Server 10.8.5, Apache simply do NOT work anymore. Unable to change settings at all, this is really the worst OSX server upgrade ever!

I wish I knew before hand

I really wish I knew before hand that I would need to purchase the server software again. Not cool Apple, not cool.

Blackmail!

I never post comments in forums, or send feedback. But this botched upgrade, and blackmail has me insensed! Apple, why are you making me spend 20 dollars again? All my services stopped running and I was forced to buy this product after upgrading to Yosemite. #AppleFail.

Really!?

I’m a bit peeved too, but I’m over it in 30 seconds. If Yosemite cost $100 no-one would complain about a $19.99 app but because Yosemite is free, people expect everything else free as well. The app itself is worth paying for.

Yosemite Server (4.0)

Great server product for home and small business. I can’t understand the rant about the free vs. have to pay for this product… it’s only 19$ for a great server product. MS Windows Server is over 700$. Has all the basic and fundamental server functions and very simple to use. As expected from Apple. Worth more than the 19$ asked for. If you can’t aford 19$ for a server product, youre probably not running a business that needs a server!

Very disappointing

This is the third time I’ve had to pay for the app after upgrading. Now the app store tells me to update server but nothing happens when I try. Although I would NEVER switch to windows it’s way too confusing for a novice which makes all their advertising false.

Is this a joke?

For one, no where was it clearly stated that I would have to buy a new server when I upgraded to Yosemite. It took me a long time to break down and finally buy it again only to find out it wont connect to my remote server thats still running Mavericks? Good one. So glad I have no choice to use a server that worked just fine as it was, only to have to buy one that no longer works the way the old one does. This is the third time Ive broken down and buy this app. 1 was the orignial purchase. 2 was when I updated to Mavericks. 3 is after upgrading to Yosemite, and each time, the app is worse than its predecessor. The built in sharing services work better than this piece of junk. Im going to request a refund and I will no longer support this app.

Webdav not working

If you are using webdav with your iPad and iPhone, wait until they fix-it. Version 5.0.15 is not fixed yet?

contact form

This new upgrade is not right because my muze web design contact form doesnt work at all. Why dont mac IT administrator coordinate with other major company before they launch they’re new products? Mac is always about themselves what about others? You guys need to get your stuff and stop mess with other people business.

Doesn’t work with Xcode for Enterprise dev teams

As of El Capitane you can’t connect an Enterprise team to the Xcode Server service. A lot of people online complaining about this, but no documentation explaining why, if this is intentional or a bug, or if there is a fix coming.

This app upgrade my home network to an enterprise-class.

This server can make your home network more powerful and value-add your existing premise.

A must have at school

The caching server contained within the Server app is worth the price of admission alone. If you have a school and there are complaints about the bandwidth, adding a caching server should help reduce wasted bandwidth especially when devices are being updated. If you are without IT support, the Apple help docs in Server are great. There are some great youtube resources to help you configure it too. Upgrading Server from my experience can be tricky. Sometimes it’s better to download Server to another Mac (assuming you have one) and install clean, then migrate from old to new. I wouldn’t wait for Server to get better if you haven’t yet tried it.

Dear Marketing Team : Please don’t ask anytime money for this app!

I bother of re-pay always for this app, when Apple release a new OS. If the Apple’s mood did not change on this, next time I’ll use Linux as server.

This is not apple, this is not Jobs way!

I was very hurted once I verified that the previous version 3.2.2 didn’t work on Yosemite even if Apple store declared that version compatible with last OS X version. Additionally, Apple has been ask its customers to pay entirely the price as the previous version just one/two weeks before installed. I remember a famous approach held by Steve Jobs when he had to communicate his disappointment to his collaborators that didn’t prove a sufficient performance: here in Apple we dont’ work this way! However, the app works fine. Then my evaluation is 4 stars for the app and 1 star for the Store management.

Still a waste of time

All I want is a Git server on a local network. I must have spent 20+ hours trying to get the configuration to work: updating, re-installing, changing settings. But it’s a constant stream of new problems with Server. New projects will push, but older large projects fail. For a while disabling SSH allowed it to work, now it’s the opposite. It’s a terrible app, and I should have spent that time learning Git command line setup.

Not Sure What the Complaints Are About

The upgrade for me was relatively painless. I am not sure what all the fuss is about. I don’t use all the services but I am not sure how you make this easier to use.

DO NOT INSTALL THE 9/17 UPDATE!!! WHAT DID YOU DO?

So, Server was not a great thing, but it at least made things easy for basic stuff. NOT ANYMORE! The whole virtual hosting setup for Apache has gone complete haywire. All HTTP hosts are now being routed through port 34580 and HTTPS ports through port 34543. As a consequence, any webpage links that rely upon relative links cannot find the necessary content, because the ports don’t match up. Furthermore, any attempt to wipe and rewrite the files with the correct ports simply get rewritten by the Server app; even wiping everything still results in the return of these nonsence ports. God knows, it worked adequately before; now, it’s totally broken — DO NOT UPGRADE TO THIS LATEST VERSION!
